Advisian selected to conduct study for utility-scale wind plant in Mozambique

7 November 2018

Advisian, the global advisory and consulting arm of the WorleyParsons Group, has been selected to conduct a feasibility study for a 120 MW wind power plant to be developed in the Namaacha District in southern Mozambique. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency awarded a $1.1 million grant to UK-based infrastructure development company eleQtra, to assess the viability of the plant. The project, which would be among the first utility-scale wind power plant in Mozambique, supports the government’s efforts to meet the country’s growing demand for electricity.

Selected for its expertise in consulting and engineering for power projects, Advisian began conducting the study in October and is slated to last for approximately 18 months.

“We are really excited to be awarded this project, which was a brilliant and collaborative team effort between eleQtra, Advisian Americas, Advisian EMEA, and our in-country Mozambique team. It is a great example of how we can leverage a diverse range of capabilities to deliver a holistic and complete solution,” said Gareth Evans, Advisian’s Vice President of Power & New Energy. “This study is a very important step to helping Mozambique assess how it can most effectively diversify and strengthen its power supply, and it is perfectly aligned with Advisian’s strategy and vision to help communities and customers meet the world’s changing resource and energy needs.”

The project will be built out in two phases of 60 MW each. The first phase will expand transmission capacity into Maputo Province when it goes online in 2021. The second phase will bring total transmission capacity to 120 MW, with a total projected cost of $250 million.

At the grant-signing ceremony, Bryan Hunt, U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission said, “Mozambique is poised to become a leader in energy generation in Southern Africa, and we see this project as a significant step in realizing this potential. We look forward to following its progress and to continuing our ongoing cooperation with our partners in the Mozambican government.”
