Upstream and Midstream

Oil and gas refinery.

Leading the way to a sustainable energy future.

The world has reached a tipping point. Urbanization and populations are increasing. So too is our energy consumption. As a result, we’ve upset our planet’s delicate carbon balance.

We all have a role to play in redressing it. Ours is to be there from the very beginning of your upstream and midstream project – helping to reduce the impact of oil and gas while the world shifts to lower carbon fuels.

Our work begins before the blueprint

Before delivery can commence there are significant decisions to be made. That’s where we step in. Whether you’re juggling regulatory constraints, mitigating environmental issues or navigating societal expectations, we’ll be your partner – wherever you are. From our global offices, we call on our regional expertise to loop in the right specialists at the right time, so you can evaluate your options and secure success for your project – before it begins.

Rethinking upstream and midstream

From partnerships with local communities to building projects embedded with carbon credits, we develop solutions that will help you to secure and safeguard your social license to operate. And by integrating technologies from other sectors – such as steam methane reforming to produce blue hydrogen – we’re pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

From carbon neutral to carbon negative

We help our clients move from LNG to hydrogen – and from blue hydrogen through CCS to green hydrogen. We also help our clients reach their goal of becoming carbon neutral. In some cases, carbon negative.

Take Drax by burning bioenergy instead of coal, and injecting the CO2 sequestered into the ground, we’re helping to transform a power station from the highest emitter of CO2 in Europe to carbon negative in just ten years.

Navigating the post-pandemic world

COVID-19 has left its mark on the upstream and midstream industry. We anticipate prolonged low oil prices and a loss of knowledge and experience from the industry. But by increasing digitization, in tracking fugitive emissions in the LNG lifecycle (FETCH4) and generating low carbon intensity solutions for future tiebacks (pseudo dry gas), we see an opportunity to support recovery and profitability.

We fully support the ambitions of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

We’ve made a commitment to achieve net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 – and we’re working to help our clients achieve the same.

Companies have a responsibility, first and foremost, to the communities in which they operate. This isn’t about how we thrive, it’s about how we survive.

Helen Riordan, Global Service Line Lead – Upstream, Midstream Consulting

We work across the spectrum, speaking with governments, regulatory bodies, educational institutions and, of course, our clients to find new ways to cut carbon emissions.

We aren’t just having these conversations. We’re leading them.
