Case Study

Transforming an old international airport into a multi-purpose sports park

Stadium

Transforming an old international airport into a multi-purpose sports park to provide exceptional experiences to the people of Hong Kong.

The Situation

The Kai Tak Multi-purpose Sports Complex (MPSC) covers 28.2 hectares of area previously occupied by the Kai Tak International Airport. It will contain three major sporting venues:

  1. 50,000 capacity main stadium with a fully-retractable roof

  2. 5,000 capacity public sports ground

  3. An indoor sports centre

The development also includes a shopping centre and retail area, a four-star hotel, office space, sport courts and an open car space. The main stadium will be Hong Kong’s national stadium – set to be a high-profile venue both nationally and internationally. It will be multi-purpose and designed to cater to a variety of events including football and rugby matches, other sporting events, concerts and cultural events.

The facility will be designed and delivered in a manner that allows the MPSC development to be complementary and integrated with the existing major sports facilities in Hong Kong – Hong Kong Stadium, Hong Kong Coliseum and Queen Elizabeth Stadium. Important to the design and planning of the MPSC development is that it provides an exceptional experience to hirers, users and the public while taking into account Hong Kong’s cultural history.
