Case Study

Aughinish optimisation project

Aerial view of refinery

Advisian (previously WorleyParsons) acted in a leadership role for an initial refinery expansion study as part of an integrated team.

The situation

Our client needed to find ways to increase production rate and optimise the existing operation to both lower production costs and also meet a short market window of opportunity with regards to the alumina price.

Our services

Advisian (previously WorleyParsons) acted in a leadership role for an initial refinery expansion study as part of an integrated team with client personnel. This involved:

  • Reviewing the existing project proposal to address any inconsistencies

  • Leading a series of optimisation sessions to identify and capture value enhancing modifications

We were subsequently engaged to provide a feasibility study for the sanctioning of a brownfield project comprising modifications and upgrades to 38 different refinery systems, delivering more than 15% additional capacity. Subsequently, full EPCM delivery services were provided to safely and successfully implement the expansion.

Results

The successful project exceeded the overall project objectives in safety, budget, schedule and refinery performance.
