Advisian and WorleyParsons judge the Gregg Elementary Science Fair in Houston

03 December 2017

On the 1st of December, representatives from Advisian, INTECSEA and WorleyParsons participated in the judging of the Gregg Elementary Science Fair in Houston, Texas. The event was sponsored by Port City Links Inc., WorleyParsons, and NASA. Advisian’s Patti Hendrix participated as a judge, along with Mac McKee, Carl Routh, Vivek Krishnan and Dolly Ondrias from INTECSEA, and Sandra Alridge from WorleyParsons.

Gregg Elementary is the Houston Independent School District in the southeast area of the city. There are 570 students in attendance, from kindergarten through to grade five. The school has a diverse student population with the majority of students coming from homes that fall below the poverty level. However, as Patti saw firsthand, this does not distract the children from wanting to learn, being inquisitive, or getting involved in and excited about their school’s science fair.

As evidence of the student’s interest, there has been an increase in student participation, from 10% in its first year to 70% this year, the sixth year of the science fair. Grades have also improved across the board by 30% in that time.

Patti found the children engaging, smart, a little shy and enamored with science. She observed: “When Joshua won the first place ribbon, you would have thought he was being handed a golden ticket. He smiled from ear to ear.”

Advisian, INTECSEA and WorleyParsons are proud to support its people who take time to reach out to their communities. This program received the WorleyParsons 2017 Foundation Award.
