FEED and PMC Design Competition (DC) for Inpex Ichthys Phase 2A, a Subsea, Umbilical, Risers and Flowline (SURF) extension of the Ichthys gas condensate development. Consisting of: 15 additional wells and associated trees, jumpers and manifolds, CRA flowlines and carbon steel MEG lines and associated subsea connection systems, flexible risers, associated controls and umbilicals
Project delivery certainty and value maximisation were key drivers for the project. Complex interface management was also required due to tie into existing facilities and the large number of internal departments, external contractors, stakeholders, and assurance of an effective “firewall” between design competition competitors.
To achieve project delivery certainty, Intecsea leveraged experience, data and key lessons learned from Phase 1 which was also performed by the team. An alliance team was assembled to provide the range of expertise required for such a complex project, which included global resource centres and integrated sub-contractors, delivered locally.
Value maximisation was achieved through a combination of minimisation of CAPEX and aggressive first gas schedule resulting in a compressed FEED and DC schedule. To minimise CAPEX, a DC was required to provide contractors with the flexibility to innovate and put forward their best solution. This was achieved in part by the provision of fit-for-purpose functional specifications which were not over-defined, but which clearly specified the required level of engineering/definition to minimise the risk of variations.
Integrated systems engineering support, critical to assuring robust and consistent basis of design, was provided by dedicated systems engineers with specific responsibilities for the FEED and DC scopes. A detailed interface management plan was prepared, and dedicated interface engineer appointed to drive the coordination of resources.
FEED and design competition packages exceeded client's expectations and Intecsea was awarded follow-on engineering in support of the next phase of the project.
