A first in Canada for CAROLs catalyst removal technology

Our robotic catalyst removal technology successfully removed support and dense-loaded catalyst from a single-bed vessel during a refinery in Canada's May 2019 turnaround, working in and under the top tray section.

Customer Challenge

Catalyst is often removed from hydrotreaters by using a dump nozzle located at the bottom of a catalyst bed. While this allows for the catalyst to be gravity dumped from the vessel, not all the catalyst is removed. Workers must enter the vessel to shovel the catalyst through the dump nozzle and then manually vacuum the remaining catalyst. Breathing air systems are required because the nitrogen environment inside the vessel doesn’t support life, and significant care must be taken when knocking down the built-up catalyst to avoid the risk of being buried.

Our solution

CAROL was piloted on a flat surface at the top of the bed, filling a 70-cubic-foot flow bin with one-inch support balls, a quarter inch support balls and 3100 pounds of catalyst in under 18 minutes. The pilot proved CAROL’s ability to remotely remove support media and dense-loaded catalyst. It also showed how CAROL can be used through an internal tray section, moving under the tray screen to remove the material.

 

Value delivered

CAROL demonstrated that our robotic catalyst removal technology provides an alternative to inert confined space entry during catalyst unloading, reducing the risk to human life. Inert entry can be limited to the removal of the top internal tray manway sections (single bed vessel).
