Europe is reliant on natural gas imported from Russia, and this dependence has become politically unacceptable for EU governments after Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022. The European Commission (EC) is developing a plan to reduce the need for Russian gas in the region and control the skyrocketing energy prices in the short-term. These circumstances present an opportunity to accelerate the transition to net zero, but challenges remain.
