Latest on NDCs - Summary of recent data published by UNFCCC

The Paris Agreement, a legally binding international treaty on climate change, was adopted by 196 Parties at Conference of Parties (COP) 21 in Paris, December 2015 and entered into force in November 2016. Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) comprise a core part of this agreement that are used by many countries to announce their climate pledges, especially pre- and post-COP 26, which was recently held in Glasgow at the end of 2021.

EU reliance on Russian gas

Europe is reliant on natural gas imported from Russia, and this dependence has become politically unacceptable for EU governments after Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022. The European Commission (EC) is developing a plan to reduce the need for Russian gas in the region and control the skyrocketing energy prices in the short-term. These circumstances present an opportunity to accelerate the transition to Net Zero, but challenges remain.
