WorleyParsons and Advisian teams collaborated with Syncrude Canada Ltd., Amec Foster Wheeler, Tetra Tech Canada, and North American Construction Group on the East In-Pit Overflow Structure, one of the largest culvert systems in Western Canada, located within Syncrude Canada’s Dam under Highway 63. The project received the “Award of Excellence” in the category of “Natural Resources, Mining and Industry” from the Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA), which has recognized exceptional work in consulting engineering in Alberta and throughout the world since 1996.
The East In-Pit Overflow project demonstrates our shared commitment to delivering collaborative strategies and solutions that yield superior results.
Project manager Derrick Nichyporuk said that “a collaborative environment, clear roles and responsibilities, and accountable project members” empowered the team to successfully meet clients’ needs.
Advisian provided engineering support for the hydraulic capacity and erosion control aspects of the overflow structure to facilitate stormwater transfer across Highway 63 during pre-closure conditions, and provided erosion protection up to the inflow design flood of “1/3 between 1:1,000 year, and probable maximum flood” per Canadian Dam Association requirements.
WorleyParsons provided overall project management of all consultants (including third-party utility companies), civil and structural engineering, and procurement services for long-lead items. Advisian was subsequently engaged to provide on-site hydrotechnical engineering and quality assurance support during construction.
Through the combined leadership and expertise of WorleyParsons and Advisian teams, the design, construction stages, and field execution of this time-sensitive project assured safety, minimized risks, complied with the dam license requirements, and allowed continued operation of Highway 63 during the construction period.
Congratulations to all members of the WorleyParsons and Advisian teams who contributed to the successful completion of this complex project.
