Improving process safety performance for ADMA-OPCO's gas supply project

Computation fluid dynamic model of knock-out drum

As part of an integrated team, we identified the shortcomings of the design for new conditions, and rectified the performance and related safety issues of an existing knock-out drum on the Habshan Platform within the Umm Shaif Super Complex.

The situation

ADMA-OPCO needed to examine increased/additional flows being routed to the knock-out drum on the Habshan Platform within the Umm Shaif Super Complex. Our initial role was to ensure that the knock-out drum will take the new flow rates within the required design parameters.

Our approach

The CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) models below show the 'before and after' behaviour of the knock-out drum due to swapping of the inlet and outlet nozzles. This was part of an innovative solution which the team proposed, based on advanced engineering techniques – performed while running adequacy studies for the Front-end Engineering Design (FEED) phase of the project to ensure the modified facilities were suitable for the new service.

Results

This work won an award at the ADMA-OPCO & ZADCO Health Safety and Environment (HSE) Awards Ceremony for setting new standards of excellence in the areas of Occupational Health, Safety, Environment & Sustainability and Energy.

The efforts of an integrated ADMA-OPCO, WorleyParsons and Advisian team for the ADMA-OPCO Gas Supply Project were recognised for identifying the shortcomings of the process safety related performance issues of the existing knock-out drum on the Habshan Platform (HAP) within the Umm Shaif Super Complex (USSC).

The successful outcome was largely due to the collaborative efforts of our Advanced Analysis team in Perth and the WorleyParsons Abu Dhabi Project team.
