Environmental Impact Assessment at Carmon Creek

Canadian creek

Shell Canada was looking to expand the Carmon Creek Oil Sands Project, a large in-situ heavy oil project in the Peace River region of northwest Alberta.

The Situation

Shell Canada was looking to expand the Carmon Creek Oil Sands Project, a large in-situ heavy oil project in the Peace River region of northwest Alberta.

Approach

Advisian was retained to design and execute an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and prepare documentation for an application to the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) and Alberta Environment (AENV) for regulatory approval.

Results

Advisian’s team of consultants completed the EIA, developed an environmental assessment and application approach, and served as regulatory liaison. We provided a HSE (Health, Safety, & Environment) plan, baseline assessments, and stakeholder consultation. Comprehensive studies on cumulative impacts, human and environmental health impacts, traditional land use, socio-economic impacts, hydrology, water quality, aquatics, vegetation, wildlife and habitat, biodiversity, groundwater, soils, noise, and climate change formed the components of the EIA. We assisted in conservation and reclamation planning. Potential impacts on habitat were identified from clearing, water usage, and air emissions. Post application support was provided for supplemental information requests, statements of concern, and regulatory strategy.
