Edikan Gold Mine

Gold mine at night

Helping our client overcome a resourcing crisis in the final stages of construction.

The situation

When Perseus Mining faced a resourcing crisis in the final stages of construction of the Edikan Gold Mine processing plant in Ghana, it prevented the company from completing the commissioning of the plant.

Our approach

Advisian had previously assisted Perseus Mining on commercial issues with the construction contractor, and was approached to provide an experienced Construction Manager to assist with the final stages of construction and the commissioning process.

This involved:

  • Working closely with the Perseus Project Manager to provide an interface between the engineering contractor and Perseus
  • Coordinating the commissioning activities between Perseus and the contractor
  • Identifying and recording safety issues and defects on a formal Punch List and following up to ensure they were rectified

A formal, structured and accountable process was established to work through the defects, and solutions were developed collaboratively to remedy issues.

Results

Advisian provided an experienced staff member who had worked in maintenance and process management at mines in Africa and Australia. A structured but diplomatic approach was implemented to the interface role between the owner and engineering contractor. Through pragmatic negotiation with the contractor, minor design modifications were made during commissioning, such as relocating controls to less vulnerable positions where they were less prone to damage, and pipework modification to improve maintenance access to pumps.

Perseus was satisfied that the plant was ‘fit-for-purpose’ and the plant was completed on schedule.
