One of the largest wind facilities yet built in Canada, the 270 MW K2 wind farm consists of 140 Siemens WST1 and SWT2-101 turbines located near the township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wananosh, on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, in Ontario, Canada. This project was selected as part of the Ontario FIT program. Grid connection is via two 500kV substations, with the 10 internal reticulation circuits at 34.5kV.
The site had several challenges, including a high water table and consistent winds during construction. The area of development is also quite heavily populated (for a wind farm site), and there were ongoing stakeholder issues during construction.
Advisian was initially contracted to undertake construction management, but this eventually grew to include: Site electrical engineer, project engineer (interim), site coordinator, blade inspector, and site safety representative.
We were able to positively influence the project schedule and assist with both the resolution of technical challenges on the site and the investigation of certain safety incidents.
