Case Study

Santos GLNG

Hydrocarbon pipe

Santos GLNG is the operator for an international joint venture that will convert coal seam natural gas (CSG) to liquefied natural gas (LNG) for export to global markets. Advisian provided specialist advice and support to its contracts and procurement team.

The situation

Santos GLNG is the operator for an international joint venture that will convert coal seam natural gas (CSG) to liquefied natural gas (LNG) for export to global markets. The multi-billion dollar GLNG Project in Queensland’s Surat Basin involves developing gas fields in the Surat Basin and transporting the gas via a 420 kilometre underground pipeline to an LNG plant on Curtis Island, near Gladstone.

Approach

Santos initially engaged Advisian in mid-2011 to provide specialist advice and support to its in-house contracts and procurement team. We assisted with the implementation and management of tender processes and the development of contracts and contracting strategies.

The project’s use of pumps and compressors requires vast amounts of power and Advisian’s specialist gas and electricity advisors were also engaged by Santos to guide their commercial and contracts team through the complex and highly-regulated electricity purchasing process. This included providing advice on sourcing and procuring power from the national electricity market.

Results

As a result of the initial work undertaken for Santos, Advisian was subsequently engaged during 2012-13 to provide commercial services to the GLNG Project.
